"Not every patient's needs are met by the same contraceptive method. FC2 gives me another option for patients who need nonhormonal contraception, STI protection or an alternative to external condoms, with the added benefit that it may be covered by insurance."

FC2 may be available to your patients for as little as $0 with a prescription and most insurance plans.

Internal condoms are a small category, so FC2 isn't stocked on retail shelves. It reaches patients through the public health sector or by prescription. The prescription is also what makes it $0 for most insured patients.

Under the Affordable Care Act, most health plans are required to cover FDA-approved contraceptive methods without patient cost sharing.4 This includes internal/female condoms when prescribed, though coverage may vary by plan.

Once FC2 is on its way, what questions will your patient ask?

An internal condom is different by design

FC2 is a single-use internal condom worn inside the vagina that helps prevent pregnancy and protects against HIV and other STIs transmitted through bodily fluids.

How does my patient use FC2?

Your patient inserts FC2 by squeezing the inner ring and guiding it into the vagina, then pushing it behind the pubic bone, similar to a vaginal ring or menstrual disc. The larger outer ring rests against the vulva. Encourage your patient to practice insertion before first use.5 Counsel patients to guide the penis into the sheath so it does not enter between the sheath and the vaginal wall.

How is FC2 different from an external condom?

FC2 is worn internally, so it does not require an erection to wear. Its soft, flexible sheath loosely lines the vagina and warms to body temperature for a natural feel. Some users report FC2 shifts friction from the receiving partner to the penetrating partner, making sex more comfortable. Your patient wears and controls the barrier method, and can insert FC2 hours before intercourse.

Six steps to correct use

1

Check the expiration & distribute lubricant

Your patient first confirms the condom is not expired, then rubs the outside of the wrapper from top to bottom to spread the lubrication inside the pouch.

2

Open

Your patient opens the wrapper at the tear notch and removes the condom, taking care not to tear the condom with fingernails or other sharp objects.

3

Position

Your patient holds the condom by the top inner ring, letting the larger ring and opening hang down. Once the condom is fully extended, they squeeze (not twist) the inner ring to create a long, narrow shape for insertion.

4

Insert

In a comfortable position (standing with a foot up on a chair, sitting with knees apart, lying down or squatting), your patient guides the squeezed inner ring into the vagina, then pushes it back and up with a finger until it sits behind the pubic bone. The condom should not be twisted. The outer ring remains outside the vagina, covering the labia.

5

During intercourse

Until your patient is comfortable with FC2, they can hold the outer ring while guiding the penis into the vagina with the other hand. Confirm that the penis enters inside FC2 and not between FC2 and the vaginal wall. If there is discomfort, they should stop and adjust the inner ring with the condom still in place. Holding the outer ring throughout intercourse is not necessary.

6

Remove

Your patient twists the outer ring and gently pulls the condom out, discarding it in the trash. FC2 should not be flushed or reused. FC2 is for single use only.

Patients should read product labeling prior to use.
